Distracted driving a problem in Alabama with auto accident risks

| Mar 1, 2021 | Auto Accident Injuries |

The catalysts for road dangers and auto accidents is consistently studied to try and formulate strategies to reduce the risk. One of the most prominent reasons for crashes in recent years has been distracted driving. This has coincided with the increased use of smartphones and other handheld devices. Recently, a study was released assessing which states had the highest rate of distracted drivers. Alabama came in second. This should be considered when there is a collision and Alabamans have suffered catastrophic injuries or lost a loved one.

Alabama ranks near the top in distracted driving

A study from the cellphone plan comparison website WhistleOut says that Alabama is behind only New Mexico on the list of most distracted drivers. It used the number of deaths on the road believed to have been due to distracted driving and the percentages for how long drivers were using their devices while they were behind the wheel. It found that New Mexico drivers were distracted 8% of the time. Alabama drivers were at 7.82%. The next three states were Montana, Washington and Kentucky. WhistleOut used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and studies from Zendrive assessing the numbers from 2018 and 2019. This was based on drivers being observed driving while distracted.

Understanding the consequences of a crash

People can face a long series of ramifications from serious injuries and losing loved ones in an auto accident. Medical costs, rehabilitation, the need for long-term care, the inability to work and contribute to a family are some challenges that arise. This can change a person’s life if they are lucky enough to survive. When there is a fatality, there is the emotional impact of the unexpected death along with the personal and financial aftermath. While it may be difficult to think about, a legal filing for compensation might be the only way to recover a sufficient amount for all that was lost.

Having professional assistance can be crucial with a legal filing

Since distracted driving accidents cause so much damage, it may be essential to prove that this was what led to the collision. Having legal advice on how to proceed when considering a filing may be imperative. For help in determining if the accident was due to distraction, recklessness, drivers who were under the influence or for any other reason, it is wise to consult with a firm experienced in helping those who have suffered catastrophic injury or loss of life in an auto accident.
